Being a parent to children of any age can be a stressful experience and one of the biggest decisions parents face with young children is, "What child care service in our local area will look after my child with the best intentions?”

If you have been through the process of locating a professional child care service in the past, this may not be that daunting, however for the first time parent looking for a day care it can be a little overwhelming.

To start the process of finding the right care service in your area you need to explore different options and your needs before placing your child in the responsibility of a caregiver. These options include family day care, before and after school hours care or long day care.

The advantages of each type of day care facility vary. For example, from a family day care service you can expect to receive a high level of professionalism with a personalised level of service. You will also find that they have fewer children to look after; this provides your child with a higher level of care but also puts them at a lower risk of catching and spreading an infection.

Once you have decided on the type of day care needed, pinpoint the facilities in your area and start to eliminate the facilities that do not meet your expectations.

The most important question you should ask each of the care facilities is to see their license, accreditations and if their care staff have completed the appropriate child care course and currently hold these qualifications.

If a care facility or their staff members do not hold the appropriate licenses and qualifications it is highly possible that they do not have the appropriate insurance or meet the minimum health, hygiene or safety requirements to care for your child the way they should be cared for.

Another aspect that parents tend to overlook when choosing a care facility in their local area is if the care facility is suited to the environment of the location. For example, if you live an environment that has a cold winter, does the building have sufficient heating, or in warmer destinations, does the facility have sufficient shade cover to keep your child from getting sunburn and dehydrated.

After choosing and enrolling your child in the day care centre that you feel best fits your needs it is a great idea to keep involved in the day care. This might include volunteering a day to help with an excursion, reading a story to the kids or even socialising with other parents and their kids, this will allow you to keep informed on how the day care is performing in looking after other children.

I hope after considering the above it helps you make the right decision in choosing the right child care facility for you, your needs and your child.
