Yamba is one of my favourite places to in the world. I grew up in the small town and have seen it go from a small beachside town and boom into a beachside getaway. Yamba offers something for everyone with its blend of panoramic scenery and perfect weather. The word is spreading about Yamba’s beaches, relaxing walks and fantastic fishing spots that the area has kept secret for so long. This is the ideal destination for a campervan holiday, with many great places to stop for a while and perhaps set up home for a week or two.
Yamba is located at the top of the Clarence River, a little north of Coffs Harbour or three hours south of Brisbane on the Pacific Highway, Yamba is far enough away for its unique, relaxed atmosphere to stay uninfluenced. There's so much to love about this destination, one of which is the view from the top of the lookouts that overlook the beaches below. There are plenty of grassy spots to set up a picnic and just enjoy the sea air while the kids stretch their legs. So of course it is time to explore and head down to the beach, pier and rock pools.
Temperatures range from about 20 to 30 degrees in summer down to 10 to 20 in winter. Year round is a good time to come here, but during the summer months it is harder to find a place to stay, so you must book early. Another plus is that you can swim at the beaches all year round.
There are eleven beautiful beaches to choose from, each with a variety of their own. Turners Beach is good for the family, with rock pools, picnic tables, comfort and rock fishing. Whiting is protected as equally good but not patrolled. Main Beach is popular with a large saltwater swimming pool, picnic tables, patrolled, cafe and ideal for children. Convent beach is tucked away from view and an excellent location to set up for the day. There is great snorkelling here and plenty of rock pools to explore. Turner and Pippi is the only other patrolled beaches in Yamba, so always keep an eye on the kids wherever you go.
Shelley Beach is a fantastic destination if you are looking for a little adventure. Walking along the coast will nearly take you two-hours or you can drive towards Angourie. Either way you will need to pack well and bring your camera for the breathtaking views. Surfers will love Angourie Point; this right hand point break draws professionals and amateurs to test their skills when the swell is rolling in.
Whale watching is another popular attraction. The two most common whales are the Southern Right Whale and the popular humpback whale, normally seen between August and September. Go to the Yamba Lighthouse headland or Angourie Point for the best chance to watch them on their journey along the coast.
Yamba holiday accommodation is varied with an option to keep everyone happy. From campervan sites, backpackers, hotels, apartments and a certified eco resort you are sure to find something to fit your needs and requirements.
